Relationship Not Religion

You’ve heard it said when you talk to people about God they say “well I’m not religious”, or they say “watch what you say around that person they’re religious”. People in the world get so hung up on the religion and the traditions in religion that they miss the whole point of what God wants for us or what He did for us. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with traditions. There are many wonderful traditions that we observe. The problem is when those traditions start to take the place of God or they totally miss the point. You see, that is exactly what Jesus was contending with when He walked the earth. People thought there was a specific way they should act and specific rules and regulations that people had to live by. When Jesus came this turned the world upside down because He was doing things that were totally against the way they thought things should go and this messed up their world because they were following God’s law or so they thought. The problem was they became more focused on the things of the law rather than what God said in the law. God didn’t come to saddle us with a bunch of rules and regulations to follow. Yes there are rules He has given us that we are to live by, but He didn’t give us these laws to become a cosmic kill joy. He gave us the laws he did to protect us and free us. They confronted Jesus on this multiple times because in their eyes, Jesus and what He was teaching was wrong. One of these specific times was when Jesus ate with the tax collectors. In Mark 2:13-17 is this instance.
13 Once again Jesus went out beside the lake. A large crowd came to him, and he began to teach them. 14 As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alpheus sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.
15 While Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. 16 When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
17 On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
You see, the problem is they were looking at things from the outlook of why in the world would Jesus Christ eat with sinners and thieves because in their eyes the tax collector’s were thieves, and this is just un heard of that someone would spend their time with people who don’t act them, dress like them or believe like they do.
However look at what Jesus said to them when they confronted his disciples “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
You see Jesus didn’t come here to beat people down and make them feel like garbage. That is the total opposite of what He came to do. Jesus Christ came to pay the debt we could never pay, to lay His life down for us so that we could have a relationship with the Father. Our Father want’s to have a relationship with you, not a religion. A religion will not get you into heaven, but a personal relationship with Jesus Christ will and it’s not about all the different traditions. God gave us the law to show us why we need a savior and to show us why we are sinners. God didn’t make it difficult. We did. He’s not a cosmic kill joy. We made him that way because we don’t like to be held accountable. When they asked Jesus about the law He made it simple. In Matthew 22:34-40
34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
37 Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’c 38This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’d 40All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
Jesus made this simple for the religious leaders and us. The Lord wants a relationship with us not a religion. It doesn’t matter what church you go to although it is very important to go to church because that is where we get to spend time worshiping the Lord and getting refueled for the week. Going to church will not get you into heaven. The only way you can get into heaven is to believe in Jesus Christ. It’s not difficult.
If that’s you right now and you want to have a relationship with Jesus Christ that can happen.
1.) Admit you’re a sinner, and ask Jesus to save you from your sins (Roman 3:23)
2.) Believe Jesus Christ is the one and only Son of God that He came and died was buried and rose again on the third day and is now seated at the right hand of God.
3.) Ask the Lord to come into your heart and have a relationship with you
This is not difficult so please don’t make it that way. God wants a relationship. He’s waiting for you. Remember you are never too broken for God. He wants you to come to Him. He’s waiting with arms open and remember you don’t have to have it all together before you come to Him. The only way you can get it all together is with Him.
